Pink Fig Patterns Feature!

I was so surprised this month when an issue of Sew News 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition showed in my mailbox with a little note saying my patterns were featured. It's kind of weird, but very exciting to see your things turn up in magazines! As I was browsing through the pages I found tons of cool stuff ranging from the hottest sewing products to an awesome tutorial on pintucking. It also included a free pattern for that adorable purse on the cover. There's so much more, but you'll have to go out and snag an issue to see it all. Or just subscribe so you always can stay up to date on all of the best sewing news!

Kill The Fat with SOUP

I love all kinds of soup, but French Onion is my absolute favorite. If ever I am at a restaurant and it's on the menu, I have to order it. The first time I had a bowl of French Onion Soup, I was 19 years old. I had just married into a family of excellent cooks and was being forced to break outside of my little box and eat things I had never eaten before. Hartman (my husband) came from a family that ate whatever was on the table whether you liked it or not and they didn't waist food. Luckily for them, pretty much everything that was made was delicious. I came from a house where my mother was an excellent cook and I liked most of the things she made, but she never made me eat if I didn't want to. My stomach was small or something because I somehow survived on very little food for the first 20 years of my life.

I do remember my dad trying to make me eat some sort of goo-lash once by forcing to me to sit at the table until it was gone. He found me at about 10pm asleep in my chair with my head next to my plate...untouched. Everybody kind of gave up on me after that and decided that I would eat when I needed it, but my in-laws would not let me off quite as easy. For the first 2 years of our marriage we lived about 10 minutes from them and we ate at their house every Sunday. It was eat or starve, so I decided to eat and to my surprise I liked a lot of it. Especially the soups and my father in law makes the best soup! What I would give for a bowl of it right now. mmmm

So - I love good soup, and I really love that I just came across THIS article about how soup can help you loose weight and stay healthy! You probably already knew that but the article goes into a little more detail. It has actually motivated to make a big pot of homemade soup each week for the rest of the winter. I'm going to start with some of my old time favorites and explore some new one's too! I'll share the recipes with you and we can see together if eating a bowl of soup every day can kill some fat! We'll probably have to steer clear of the really creamy one's for now. We can eat those when we're skinny :)

I'm going to post the weight loss section of the article for an easy read, but if you want to know all the benefits check out the entire article by clicking on the link in the paragraph above:

Lose weight with soup
Obesity is on the rise throughout the industrialized world, resulting in a startling increase in the rates of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. You can count yourself out of the statistics if you eat a bowl of soup at least once a day. Nutritious low-salt soups will nourish you as they flush excess wastes from your body. It has been found that people who eat one serving of soup per day lose more weight than those who eat the same amount of calories, but don’t eat soup. Homemade soup is your best bet, because canned soups tend to be loaded with salt and chemicals. My advice is to use organic vegetables whenever possible. The herbicides and pesticides that can be present in conventional produce can assault the immune system and overload it with toxins.

Here is the first of my Favorites! FRENCH ONION SOUP from Rachel Ray ( I changed it a little):

INGREDIENTS:

One 5-ounce bag seasoned croutons (about 2 cups) or sliced baguette bread

1/2 cup dry red wine

Two 14.5-ounce cans beef broth

2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced

4 thick slices Swiss cheese

DIRECTIONS:

In a deep skillet, heat 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil over medium heat.
Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent and
softened, about 15 minutes. Add the wine and bring to a boil. Pour in the
beef broth, lower the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes; season with
pepper.

Preheat the broiler. Divide the soup among 4 ovenproof bowls, then top each
with one-quarter of the croutons and a slice of cheese. Set the bowls on a
rimmed baking sheet and broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden, about
1 minute.

KILL THE FAT

It's time again, to Kill The Fat!

So for those of you who followed me last year...are you skinnier? I'm not! Not that I didn't try. I worked out all year 3 to 4 times a week, ate healthy, and still didn't see much improvement. I did loose several inches around my waist, but I kind cheated. I won't go into detail, but I will tell you that it involved a laser. Kind of stupid, but hey - it worked.

If you remember from last year I was working out at home with a huge stock pile of DVD's that I still love and will always keep in my possession, but this year I am doing it different. I also tried to follow a workout and food plan that my SIL Kassi laid out for me, but I was really and truly very bad and that. This time I am going to do better and I finally decided to follow her advice to join a gym. DUH! Best thing I have ever done!!! It's making a huge difference and I am starting to notice some big changes. Working out at home was definitely not a waist because it gave me the endurance and strength I needed to jump right into the gym classes. Most of my DVD's like Turbo Jam and Zumba helped me learn the same moves they use in the classes and saved me from looking like a total doofus the first few weeks. So if you're still working out on your own at home that's great and you have got to keep going, but I have to say that NOTHING is as motivating as MOE the turbo kick queen at the gym. Holy smokes! I'm sure you have a Moe at your gym too, so get there as soon as you can. Besides that, I have a group of friends that I meet there every day that makes working out a blast! We send out emails the night before encouraging each other to go and on Friday's we reward ourselves with a killer pilates class and healthy lunch afterwards. I absolutely love it! Who knew I could become addicted to working out? If you do it right, you can too!

So here is the new plan. Kill The Fat is back and this time it really is going to DIE! If you want to join me in an aggressive attack on those stubborn lumps and bumps then I welcome you! I want to hear your comments and success stories. I'll share mine with you too, along with workout playlists, workout schedules that I'm following, my favorite classes at the gym, my favorite home DVD's, my favorite HEALTHY foods and recipes, and whatever else I can think of to help us get fit. I'll talk about eating organic verses not eating organic, share scary food stories that I come across to freak you out and get you eating organic as much as possible (even if it costs more, you'll find that it is worth it). Or I'll at least get you checking the ingredients on the food you buy to make sure they don't have things like bleach, high fructose corn syrup, cotton seed oil, and modified starches in them. I mean, when I put it that way doesn't it sound like a recipe for fat?

If you have a hard time eating everything healthy (like me), and you don't like things like liver, fish, and bovine (like me), and you do like sweet treats and diet coke (like me) then I'll give you a list healthy whole food supplements to help you keep your body young and energized, despite the crap you love to eat. To loose weight and get healthy you will have to cut down, but you won't have to go without.

Sound reasonable? Good - then we're starting now! Check in weekly for new posts and start Killing Your Fat. Join my followers (on the right side bar) to stay in touch.

Prayers and Donations for Haiti

I have just been watching video clips and looking at photographs of Haiti and the devastation that they are experiencing. It's hard to imagine what they are going through as I sit here safely in my little sewing room. My heart is overflowing and I want to help them, especially the children. The pictures of the children makes my heart ache. For the rest of this month I will be donating a minimum of $1 for every $10 that I make in my ETSY shop. I'll do more if I can. I will be sending my donations through my church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) which is well known for it's Humanitarian Aid Efforts and 100% of the donations will go to help the needy. Right now their focus is on Haiti. So if you want to donate yourself, but aren't sure of the best way to go about it, I recommend reading about the Church's Emergency Response Services to Haiti HERE and donating HERE. Pray for the people of Haiti.

SteamPunk

Have you ever heard of SteamPunk?
It is this cool and funky, modern design meets Sherlock Holmes kind of style. It applies to clothes, decor, art, and accessories (my favorite being jewlery). I think that's all, but there could be more. Here is a peek at some of the jewerly I have been eyeing made by some ultra creative designers on ETSY:

What do you think? Sherlock Holmes right? That movie was so good.

Moving Forward

Finally it's 2010! I'm excited to start a new year so I can make new goals and move forward in life. I feel like the worst is behind us now. The worst being the major change in our life plan last summer. Moving to California so Hartman could pursue his dream to become a chiropractor was a tough choice for me. I was terrified to leave my home of 32 years and start a new life with no family, friends, or income to help us survive, but somehow it has worked out perfectly. Hart only has a year and half left of school now and there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel! We have made a lot of good friends here and are seriously considering making it our permanent home. I had a great year with my pattern business which has earned me the title "sugar momma." I like it for now, but will be more than happy to hand the reigns back over to Hartman once he gets on his feet. Being a sugar mamma was never my life long dream. Still, it's nice to know that I can help out when it's needed.

I have some new things planned for this year with my business and my blog. I hope I can keep things interesting enough to keep you coming back for more. To start the month off I'll be reintroducing Kill The Fat in a few days and will also start a new Pattern Of The Month contest. To hold you over while I take down my Christmas decorations and clean the house after having guests for a week, I thought I would post some pictures of the Apron's that were given away over Christmas . Enjoy!
